Clinton,
Mississippi, is the home of Mississippi College, the state's oldest
existing institution of higher learning. Clinton produced statesmen
such as Walter Leake, writers and artists such as Barry Hannah and
Wyatt Waters, and modern celebrities such as Lance Bass and Mandy
Ashford. Clinton began as the Mount Dexter trading post on the Old
Natchez Trace. The town was founded as Mount Salus in 1823 by Walter
Leake, one of Mississippi's first U.S. senators and the third
governor. Six years later, Clinton fell one vote short of becoming
the state capital. This pictorial history is a chronicle of Clinton's
most indelible individuals, families, and institutions.
Walter
Leake‘s great grandson Dr. Henry Williamson Johnston married Sallie
Iungherr, the only surviving child of Theodore Iungherr. He
immigrated to the USA on December 17, 1831 at the age of 25 years.
Where did he came from? I found two sources with different
information. He was born 1806 in Brunswick OR in Eisenbach, Bavaria.
I am proud I found 360 descendants of Theodore.
This
amazing book contains details about the family of Sallie and Henry
Johnston, pictures of some members of the family and – very
fascinating – a photo of the store on West Leake Street run by
Katherine R. Johnston!
On
the cover of the book we can see the Victorian-style residence built
around 1900 by Sally Iungherr (Younger) Johnston. Today it is the
home of her great granddaughter Lyda Gilmore and her husband Robert.
